How to Become a Forensic Document Examiner

Currently, there is no college degree or major in forensic document examination. If you want to become a forensic document examiner you will first need to obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and then complete specialized training in a variety of topic areas related to handwriting identification and questioned document analysis.

Through ASTM International, forensic document examiners working in the public and private sectors have created standard guides that outline the scope of work relating to forensic document examiners and the minimum training requirements for forensic document examiners. For more information please review the following ASTM Guidelines:

ASTM E444 – 09, Standard Descriptions of Scope of Work Relating to Forensic Document Examiners
ASTM E2388 – 11, Minimum Training Requirements for Forensic Document Examiners

These standards can be purchased online at http://www.astm.org/Standards/forensic-science-standards.html#E30.02
